Are you ready for the best recipe of your life?! It’s finally here! The most anticipated recipe that I have been asked for every single time these delicious, fluffy rolls have been concocted. It is time for the reveal of the recipe behind my mama’s famous pepperoni rolls!
Ever since I can remember, my mom has always been making these rolls, and ever since I can remember she would constantly be asked what her recipe was and what she did different from the rest! Now, if you are not from West Virginia you may be wondering….what in the world is a pepperoni roll? Well my friends, a pepperoni roll is a fluffy, delicious, soft, ooey, gooey, roll that happens to have pepperoni inside…and my mama’s has a bit of a twist! Don’t worry! These aren’t nearly as hard to make as you think, and I definitely do not make my own dough…so buckle up and let’s begin.
The first question I am always asked is what dough I use and if i make my own. The answer is: no, I do not make my own dough, and I do not plan on ever starting. Not making your own dough will save you so much time…and stress! I use the 36 pack of Rhodes self-rising rolls. You can find them in the freezer aisle at your local grocery store.
The other ingredients that are in this recipe is mozzarella cheese, pizza sauce, and of course…pepperoni. I use two packs of pepperoni because I like to add a few slices to each roll. You will also need spray butter, to spray the tops of the dough before you put them in the oven.
The first step to making these rolls is to thaw the dough and to let it rise, because it is frozen, for 2 to 4 hours. Lay the rolls on parchment paper on a flat surface. Here is what it will look like when you lay the rolls out to thaw:
Here is what they will look like when they are ready to make into pepperoni rolls:
After the dough has risen and thawed out, you will need to begin to flatten each roll and begin to add the other ingredients. I recommend building each roll one at a time, because if you biuld them all at once the dough will begin to stick to the parchment paper and you will have a huge mess on your hands! The first step to building your pepperoni roll is to add a teaspoon, or so, of sauce. I never really measure this part, I just make sure the dough is covered in the middle and you can’t see the bottom of the roll:
The next step is to add the cheese or pepperoni. It doesn’t really matter which you add first. I add just a sprinkle of mozzarella cheese. If you wanted to get fancy with it you could add pepper-jack cheese for an added spice to take it up a notch, but I prefer to keep it simple! Then I add exactly three slices to the roll! This is when the two packs of pepperoni will come in handy!
Then it is as simple as folding the dough over so that the filling is covered and place it on the backing sheet! I fold my dough corner to corner, and just make sure that none of the filling is hanging out anywhere. Then you place on a baking sheet and spray one spritz of butter on the tops of each roll before placing in the oven. Bake for 11 minutes or until golden on top! See the full recipe below. There you have it! The secret has been revealed! I hope you all enjoy it as much as I have over the years. See below for complete list of ingredients.
- 1 bag of mozzarella cheese
- 2 bags of pepperoni
- 1 jar of pizza sauce
- 1 36ct bag of Rhodes Self-Rising Rolls
